Delivering Bad News

At the moment we are faced with a number of challenges as business managers. We need to keep our productivity high and our teams as motivated as possible while recognising that we are facing challenging trading conditions.

During this challenging time you may need to have difficult conversations with your team to communicate corporate messages that will have a negative outcome.

It may be that you have to speak to an individual about:
• Making them redundant
• Not giving them a pay rise
• Managing expectations about opportunities for advancement in the organisation

We thought it would be an idea to help you be a little more prepared for these challenging conversations. These are our top five tips:
1. Face your fear: the conversation needs to happen, so don’t put it off.
2. Consider the recipient of the message: what can you do to soften the blow? Some people like to hear it straight. Others will want the message ‘fluffed up’ a bit.
3. Practise what you are going to say with a colleague or HR Department, so that you can be as prepared as possible.
4. Think carefully about where to hold the conversation. For example, meeting rooms with glass walls can be very intimidating.
5. When you have finished the conversation give the individual time to consider how the decision will affect them. You may consider allowing them to go home for the rest of the day.
